Rhea PIllai seeks production of Leander Paes passport documents....

by

In the ongoing Rhea Pillai v/s Leander Paes Domestic Violence proceedings before the Magistrates Court, Bandra. Rhea Pillai has moved an application seeking production of Leander Paes passport and relevant documents. The pleading before the Domestic Violence court state that Rhea Pillai was mentioned in the column of “ Name of Spouse” in Leander Paes earlier Indian Passport issued on 19th February 2008 expiring on 18th February 2018. In an interesting twist of affairs, Leander got a new passport issued in 2014 in the USA stating that he lost his passport in March 2014 whilst he was in the USA. The new passport issued in 2014 knocked of Rhea Pillai’s name from the column of the spouse. When questioned about the discrepancy of personal details, Leander’s spokes person stated that “ it was an administrative lapse by the passport officials”. The Regional Passport Officer rubbished this and went on record stating that “ the details in a passport are based on data provided by the applicant.... Without proof , we don’t put such details in an important document like a passport”

Interestingly on the subject of Leander’s loss of old passport in the USA , the deputy passport officer at the RPO when contacted stated that “We have not received any information about loss of Paes’s passport. Even if it was lost in the US and he was issued a travel document or another passport by the Indian Embassy there, we would have been informed and we would have updated our records.”

In her application Rhea Pillai has also sought production of the complaint and other relevant documents reporting the purported loss of Paes’s passport in the US.

As part of the pleadings, Rhea Pillai has submitted cogent evidence in the nature of Bank statements, receipts and payment slips to Court to show the money spent from her bank accounts on the shared household and the amounts borrowed by Leander Paes from her all which runs into crores and till date has not been returned. It turns out that Leander Paes conveniently made her pay for the shared household and the child’s medical and educational expenses and he has also borrowed money from Rhea for his own expenses which she is rightfully claiming in the proceedings before the Magistrate. Leander Paes in his reply filed before the Magistrate’s court hearing the Domestic Violence matter has stated that he has very meagre savings.

When contacted Rhea PIllai’s lawyer Ms. Amna Usman from the Chambers of Mr. Mahesh Jethmalani confirmed filing of documents on behalf of Rhea Pillai and said “ the matter is sub juice hence it will not be appropriate to comment on it. Let the evidence on record speak for itself.”

Oxfam India & Mami’s 'Women in Film' Brunch celebrates women who have overcome the odds

Oxfam honours Shadab Jahan’s remarkable life story

Mumbai: It was a celebration of women who have fought the odds at the Oxfam & Mami’s 'Women in Film' brunch. The Oxfam & Mami’s 'Women in Film' brunch saw some of the strongest women from cinema including actors, writers, producers, directors and other streams of cinema. What was special this year was celebrating the story of Shadab Jahan - a victim of domestic violence who related her story of oppression and her fight for survival.

Shadab Jahan and Rehana Ali, mother daughter came from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. They were here to speak about their fight against violence, against patriarchy. Shadab Jahan is a domestic violence survivor and now helps women overcome with violence in their lives through her NGO, Astitva.

Shadab says, “I am very happy to be a part of this gathering and to share my story with such an accomplished group of women. It was heart-warming to get support from strong women of the film industry.”

"We wanted reel life heroes to meet real life heroes. Ordinary women in India are fighting patriarchy, gender bias and regressive social norms. It is time that Indian cinema celebrates brave women and take a look at the portrayal of women in films, which is far away from reality," said Rina Soni, director Oxfam India.

Accomplished film personalities who supported the cause were Manisha Koirala, Kiran Rao, Kriti Sanon, Aahana Kumra, Sandhya Mridul, Renuka Shahane, Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das among others.

The 'Women in Film' brunch is an annual event held during the Mumbai film festival as an extension of the Oxfam Best Film on Gender Equality Award.

This year four films have been shortlisted for the Oxfam Best Film on Gender Equality Award. The films that have been shortlisted this year are 'Village Rockstars’, 'The Hungry’, 'Granny (Ajji)’ and 'Checkmate (Turup)’. The winner will be announced on October 18th, 2017on the closing night of the festival.

The phenomenon of fame throws me off guard: Tabu

by

With films such as "The Namesake", "Chandni Bar", "Maqbool" and "Haider" to her credit, Tabu is undoubtedly one of the finest performers of her generation, but the actor says becoming a star was never on her agenda.

The 45-year-old actor, who did an offbeat film like "Maachis" in the initial days of her career, says she decided to carve her own path in films as she never wanted to be pigeonholed.

Excerpts from an interview:

Q- You have build a varied filmography. It seems you always opted for variety instead of trying to get at the top in the movie business.
A- I was always passionate about my work. I wanted to show people what I am as an actor. I did not join the film industry with an ambition to become famous or popular. I am a very private person. I don't like so much attention. The whole phenomenon of fame throws me off guard. In this whole madness, I find something that I can hold onto, enjoy and that is doing different roles.

Luckily I met people like Gulzar ji, Rajeev Menon and others who made my journey interesting. For me, the only interesting part is when I am into a character and growing with every film. 'The Namesake' changed my life, it opened new doors and then (there was) 'Life Of Pi'. It was all a great experience. I wanted to play it my way, I was convinced if I do it my way I will get it right. I hated it when people told me to do what others were doing.

Q- Do you pick light-hearted films for monetary reasons or for friendships and content-driven projects to satisfy your hunger as an artiste?
A- I don't know about other actors. If at that given point I feel if I like it, I do it. I don't think anything else then. As an actor, you are not creating roles for yourself. I make the best choice from what is offered to me or what will push me to the next level.

No one will do a film if they are unhappy with their role. The fundamental thing should be happiness to play a role, whether you are doing it for monetary reasons or for friendship, it does not matter... No one does bad work for the sake of friendship or money.

Q- Every film you do, you stand out. How do you manage to do that with each project?
A- I don't make a conscious effort to stand out. It is great that people feel so. It happens unconsciously. I don't know what the factors are that people think of me like that.

At different points, you have different yardsticks and barometers to select a project and it also depends on what you are offered, what you want to do at that point and what you want to stay away from. It is a mix of many factors. Films are something that no one can plan. If I like something, I feel the character is outstanding and it will allow me to explore my creative abilities, I do it.

Q- Would it be right to say that you are the dark horse of Bollywood?
A- I can't put labels on and give definitions to myself... that is for others to write or say. I am glad that I got the right platform to reinvent myself and do something different every time. I did not let go of the chances that I got.

I am grateful to the directors for offering me great roles. I give credit to the writers for writing such good parts. I was exploring myself again and again. I did parts that one would not do. I wanted to grow as an actor. I am lucky to get good work that established me as an actor and made me the dark horse.
